We, The Dating Gurus, love anything free. But we feel a bit cheated. The Internet was supposed to mean the free flow of information to everyone. It meant the end of the tight hold Big Mainstream Media had on information. Information free for the people! Not so much. The Web should be littered with tons of great zero-cost dating sites, but there are few. It boggles the Gurus' minds that no dating site has the enough guts to go free and stay free. The worst offenders are dating sites that mask their true intentions of fleecing you behind a friendly veneer.
Truthfully, we have yet to find a dating site that is 100% free. Free sites are still swayed by the siren call of extra dough. Even though they might be making good money off of advertising, why not offer bonus features and see if anyone takes the bait?
1. OK Cupid
OK Cupid stands tall above all other free and semi-free online dating sites. Its membership base is continually growing, though it does tend to be limited to large urban areas. The men and women of OK Cupid tend to be better educated and hotter than members of other sites. What isn't to love about The Cupe?
100%. You can search for members, message members, and receive messages--the full complement of dating service functions. It's only if you want enhanced features--such as browsing anonymously, yet still seeing who visited you--that you will pay anything.
Plenty of Fish (POF) does "free" pretty good, too. It's just that we aren't overwhelmed by the selection of members, populated by scammers, players, or just by a lot of heavily made-up women or men who suck in their guts and hide their eyes behind sunglasses. Fortunately, POF has seen the writing on the wall and begun to slowly clear out the scammers and players, though nothing can be done about that third class of members.
100%. You've got tons of mobility as a regular member of POF. The only thing that upgrading your membership gets you is the chance to "[unlock] all of our great features" (which are essentially meaningless) and promoting your profile in the search results, which is kind of nice.
Date Hookup is a distant third, a paltry offering. The membership base is thin, the interface is deceptive to the point of being sneaky, and membership profiles are so short that you barely can get a feel for the person. Use DateHookup.com only if your computer is somehow incapable of pulling up OK Cupid or POF.
100% free to use all of the features. The VIP package is worthless and runs from $7.95 to $14.95 per month.
